Introduction to ACU
The ACU National Gallery at Strathfield opened in 2001, to coincide with the introduction of the Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design course offered by the university. The gallery is strategically placed in the inner western area of Sydney where there are no other significant public galleries available to the community. It is located in close proximity to the Sydney Bicentennial Park, where there are many significant sculptural and environmentally based artworks on display.
ACU National was the prize sponsor of The Blake Prize for Religious Art from 2000-2005, and aims to stage exhibitions that, in a similar way, focus on the spiritual, social and ethical dimensions of artistic practice.
The gallery is in the process of setting up a “friends of the gallery” committee, with the aim of enhancing our relationship with the community of the inner west of Sydney through the provision of regular curated exhibitions, artists’ talks and community art classes.
A well-known local artist, Jeanette Siebols, teaches art classes to local residents and members of the university community. These art classes are part of ACU National’s Community Outreach Program and are a valuable resource available to the local community of Strathfield and surrounding suburbs.
